Bio-alarm clocks to wake you at the right time

sleep-tracker.jpg
I don’t know about others, but I always feel that whenever I’m in deep sleep, my morning alarm starts buzzing. Wish there was some kind of device which would know when to exactly wake me up. Seems like my prayers have been answered. Bio alarm clocks are amazing. They are designed to wake sleepers at the perfect time. The clocks detect brainwaves or body movements and are programmed to wake sleepers during light sleep, which occurs periodically through the night. Consumers who used Sleeptracker, which is worn on the wrist felt that they have already been awake for some time, and the clock just let them knows it.

COOLINE thermal cooling vest

cooline.jpg
The current concern for most nations is global warming. With global temperatures rising, climatologists in Germany are predicting a possible 1.8 to 2.3 degrees Celsius rise in temperatures by the end of this century. Various cooling vest have been introduced in the market to tackle the climate related health issues and combat the enormous stress heat can cause on the human body. Fan driven cooling vests are one of the complex products available. However COOLINE thermal cooling vest has been developed to worn with everyday clothing to cool the body directly, the vest is designed as a functional piece of clothing that is simply filled with water from the tap and uses evaporative cooling to regulate body temperature. Created from high tech fleece which makes it capable of holding several times its own weight in water, Coolline maintain an optimal temperature for a number of hours at a time.

Spiderman suit to climb skyscrapers

spidy.jpg
When I watch any of the spidey movies I keep wondering that what wonders could we achieve, if we had Spiderman powers. Well a team of scientist in Italy have come up with a formula still at the drawing-board stage for a suit they say would allow the wearer to scale a wall or hang upside down just like the comic book hero. Now you can imagine if we had such powers we could attain so many impossible tasks. It won’t be long before you see people climbing the Eiffel tower with nothing but sticky shoes and gloves to support them. However the practical purpose of this suit that I can see is to help firefighters or space exploration to cleaning skyscrapers.

Hearing Aid that are not visible

invisible-aid.jpg
Otologics, of Boulder, CO have developed hearing aids which are practically invisible. I know you are wondering that if they are invisible then how they work. Actually they are fully implantable device that will soon change the world of hearing loss. Millions of people wear hearing aids which have made life comfortable for them. However these aids have some limitations like hearing impaired can’t wear them while showering or swimming and most models are hard to wear while sleeping. But the new kind of hearing aid will overcome these problems. It’s invisible and waterproof because all of its circuitry including its battery and microphone is in the user’s head. A survey has also found out that the device not only improved their hearing, but also sounded more natural than their old hearing aid. The only problem is that are all these benefits worth taking the risk associated with required surgery. Now that’s the call the user has to take.

PacMan video game sheds light on fear

-game.jpg
A Pac-Man video game that delivered electric shocks to players has been used to shed light on how the brain act in responses to forthcoming danger. The study revealed that when humans face some sort of threat they alter their behavior depending on whether the threat is distant or nearby. Researchers found that the closer the gamers got to danger, the more they simply acted on instinct. As the volunteers played the game, the MRI scanner which monitored their brain activity showed which regions of the brain were receiving the highest flow of blood. The higher the blood flow to an area of the brain, the more active that area is. The forebrain is active during periods of anxiety, and helps coordinate escape strategies to avoid the threat.

Charmr a new concept device for diabetics

charmr.jpg
For all you diabetic patient who are fed up with their test kits and finger pricking to test blood, can in few years get rid of them as Charmr a new concept device that combines an insulin pump and monitor into one in an effort to give those with diabetes with a much more modern look an added functionality in delivery of treatment. The new design is not only very cool and sleek but also more discreet than older style, box-like pumps. The patient can attach a small stick like device around his neck that would act as a monitor and control for the pump. The device would communicate wirelessly with the pump and be totally waterproof and suitable for exercise. The control would also act as a means to select the insulin dosage using a sequence of easy to follow screens and even recommends the dosage needed. This slimline design which resembles an MP3 could be used by the user to check their blood glucose levels anywhere and administer a dosage of insulin without drawing attention to themselves.

New way to regulate blood pressure found

blood-pressure.jpg
Millions of people suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension, and although powerful drugs are already available, few manage to achieve target blood pressure levels compelling researchers to find new methods to combat blood pressure. UK scientists have discovered a new way to regulate blood pressure, offering hopes of new drugs to combat strokes and heart attacks. Scientist discovered that oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide cause a bond to form between two amino acids which, in turn, activates PKG(Protein kinase G is an important protein in all tissues, but in the cardiovascular system it plays a fundamental role in blood pressure regulation). This then leads to a lowering of blood pressure. The team’s novel discovery unlocks opportunities for the design of new drugs to combat high blood pressure. Also the mechanism provides new insights into how oxidant stress affects cells and tissues.

Sony Develops Battery Fuelled By Sugar

Untitled-2.jpgThere have been various groups researching the energetic potential of sugar for use as batteries, but it is Sony who has developed a biological battery powered by sugar. Unlike other similar batteries, Sony says it has accomplished the world’s highest power output for passive-type bio batteries. By using carbohydrates and enzymes to create power the battery attained a power output of 50 milliwatts enough to control music play back on a memory-type Walkman. Sony explained the mechanism- new cathode structure efficiently supplies oxygen to the electrode while making certain that the appropriate water content is maintained. Optimizing the electrolyte for these two technologies has enabled these power output levels to be reached.

Festos develop a powered arm named Airic’s arm

artic-%20arm.jpg
A producer of industrial control systems Festos, with the help of in-house technology successfully created a robotic arm ‘Airic’s_arm’ which is based on the combination of mechatronics and the biological model of a human being. The Airic’s_arm is a powered robotic arm fixed with artificial bones and muscles. The bone structure incorporates human bones such as ulna and radius, metacarpal bone and finger bone, shoulder joint and shoulder blade – joints that do not occur as such in the technical world – is moved via 30 muscles. The muscles used are Fluidic Muscle, which are already a part of Festo products.
