Very soon your cell phone will be able to replace your personal trainer, your general physician thanks to Japan’s NTT DoCoMo Inc. The cell phone is designed for people with busy lives who want a hassle-free way of keeping track of their health. It can take your pulse, check your body fat, time your jogs and tell you if you have bad breath. It even assesses stress levels and inspires you with a pep talk. This portable personal trainer has inbuilt motion sensor that detects body movement and calculates how many calories you burn while walking, running, climbing stairs, or resting. It is incorporated with a breathalyzer to inform you about your bad breath it turns into a mini body fat calculator. A sensor at the top of the phone takes your pulse from your fingertip.

Interactive 3D model to display human health records

Computer technology has definitely made life much easier for doctors. One of the newest developments has come from IBM researchers in Zurich, Switzerland helps doctors to analysis medical data of patients using a 3D avatar of the human body. The Anatomic and Symbolic Mapper Engine (ASME) offers an interactive 3D model of the human body that displays health information at a glimpse so doctors can visualize the medical histories of their patients and thereby improve care. Each patient’s records are organized visually so when a patient complains of chest pain, the doctor can click on the avatar chest and see all relevant records including text entries, lab results and medical images such as radiographs or MRIs.

Germans researchers develop artificial Corneas

An artificial cornea that promises easy integration with a patient’s native cornea, and avoids cellular hyperplasia on its plastic surface has been developed by German researchers at Fraunhofer Institute. The specialty about the cornea is that it is based on polymer which absorbs no water and allows no cells to grow on it. A special protein is applied which helps the natural cell to latch on to. These proteins can survive the later thermal sterilization of the artificial cornea without being damaged, as it does not have the three-dimensional structure typical of large proteins. The first implants have already been tested in rabbits’ eyes – with promising results.
