A Star Wars like laser beam device to fight cancer and Alzheimer

starwars.jpg If only the realities of life could be tackled by simply waving a Star Wars styled light sabre in the air! Well, British scientists are gearing up to give humans this power too with a revolutionary laser which could fight cancer. Akin to the light saber from Star Wars, this device, comprises of a square rod that canl fire a laser beam with a bull's eye shot at the required cell and can puncture a hole in it. This would allow chemotherapy drugs to enter and kill any remaining cancer cells. It would be particularly useful for hard-to-reach cancers such as that of the pancreas. Developed by Professor Kishan Dholakia from the university school of physics and Dr Frank Gunn-Moore from the school of biology, this new the new device relies on a method called 'photoporation'.

Such a technique allows insoluble compounds such as genes and drugs to be injected into individual cells with the assistance of light. Dr Gunn-Moore also sees more areas of application of this out-of-science-fiction device, like Alzheimer's disease.

With such thrilling medical gadgets, studying medicine and tackling diseases will be fun!
