Cosmetic vaginal surgery: A worrying trend

designer_vagina.jpg Leading urogynaecologist, Professor Linda Cardozo of King's College Hospital, London has spoken out against the growing popularity of cosmetic vaginal surgery. She discussed certain issues at a medical meeting in Montreal, Canada and stated, "Women want to emulate the supermodel. It's part of a trend" A google search showing 45000 references to cosmetic vaginal surgery yet on medical databases such as PubMed or Medline. The more customary vaginal cosmetic procedure was reduction labioplasty (to make the labia smaller) requested by women either for aesthetic reasons or to alleviate physical discomfort.

The types of vaginal surgery conducted or requested by women besides Labioplasty are Vaginal Rejuvenation (to make the vagina tighter) or Hymenoplasty (to restore the hymen to make the women appear a virgin). Since most of the procedures are done in private sector, it's totally unregulated. Moreover, there is no assurance about the improvement of function after the surgery, nevertheless, the surgeons pledge on the improvement of appearance of their genitals.
