Japanese company design airbag to prevent injury

peoples_airbags.jpg A Tokyo based company has designed an airbag that prevents elderly people from injuring themselves by falling over. This airbag is targeted for the aged folks suffering from epilepsy, who are susceptible to injury. The head of the firm, Mitsuya Uchida, claims that the device when strapped around the body inflates in 0.1 seconds, if it detects it is accelerating towards the ground. However this airbag cannot protect those who fall forward as it has one pocket behind the head and the other around the hips. The company feels that they have a huge market for their product as Japan has a large elderly population with nearly 30 million people over the age of 65.
