- Philips microbubles could have an impact on cancer treatment
-
Folks at Philips Research seem to a break through with their microbubbles for cancer treatment. Even though their invention is not as attention-seeking as lasers or nano explosives, but it could have a big impact on cancer treatment. The red-blood-cell-sized bubbles would be used to carry drugs through the patient's bloodstream and tracked using ultrasound imaging. Then, once they've reached their target, a focused ultrasound pulse would rupture the bubbles and release their drug payload. Once they have arrived at their objective a focused ultrasound pulse would rupture the bubbles and release their drug payload. The company believes that this treatment would not only increase the effectiveness of the drugs, but reduce the side effects normally associated with them and, ultimately, lead to a quicker recovery.
The things are yet at the clinical stage but folks at Philips seem to be very confident regarding their microbubbles.
