Scottish company opens the world's first bionic hand facatory

Bionic_hand_factory_1.jpg A Scottish firm has now officially opened its first commercially available bionic hand. More than 70 of the hands are now being used by amputees around the world after the product was launched last July. Donald McKillop, using the i-LIMB for the past eight months after losing his right hand in 1977 says that you can put the fingers in any position and twist the wrist to what position you want it to be in. The hand is operated by picking up electrical signals from the muscles on the arm where it is placed. The fitting itself is non-invasive.

Stephen Timms, UK Minister of State for Competitiveness says "I would hope that as time unfolds and the manufacturing processes speed up that these kinds of artificial limbs will be more widely available and I'm very proud that Scotland is leading the way with that."
