The nasal spray that could combat Alzheimer's symptoms

nasal-spray.jpgAlzheimer, which attacks the memory of a person especially in old aged, is known to have affected 700,000 Britons and 500 cases of the disease are diagnosed every day. Although existing pills can delay the progress of symptoms such as memory loss, their effectiveness is limited. So Israeli scientists have developed a nasal spray packed with viruses that could ease the devastating symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. The spray is filled with viruses called bacteriophages, or phages for short, which break up these sticky patches, known as plaques. A nasal spray because the nose allows it to sneak into the brain past the blood-brain barrier, a membrane which usually prevent drugs and other toxins from entering. The phages break up the amyloid plaques, they are naturally flushed out of the body with no side-effects.

Scientists hope a version of the spray for humans could be on sale within seven years.
