Too much salt risky for toddlers

Experts are warning parents that children as young as four are eating so much salt it is putting their health at risk by raising their blood pressure. Each added gram eaten raised blood pressure considerably. This increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Experts asked the parents to check labels, especially on foods such as breakfast cereals and snack products and look out for hidden salt in foods. Every extra gram of salt consumed by the children was related to a rise in systolic (peak) blood pressure of 0.44mmHg - which the researchers say tallies with past studies linking high salt intake with high blood pressure.

It may be hard for parents to tell their children they can't have fries every day, or that they need to eat a different breakfast cereal, or that some instant noodles should be avoided completely, but surely it's a small price to pay to reduce their risk of having a heart attack or stroke when they are older.
