World’s first custom-made bones conceived in Japan

custom made bone.jpg In this day and age, man has achieved the expertise to create almost everything that has been available as natural or god’s gift to mankind. Science is challenging the supreme power by providing alternatives to save lives with vital artificial body parts like heart too. And another pioneering feat in the world of medicine is that researchers from Japan have created the world's first custom-made bones. Known as CT Bone, they are crafted using the patient's computer tomography (CT) data, a form of medical imaging. Unlike the current substitutes of real bones or ceramic ones, these latest man-made bones are shaped out of a blend of calcium phosphate powder and a solidifying liquid. Such an innovative break-through can empower the doctors to create new bones within hours of an accident so long as the patient has electronic data on file.

As of yet, these implants are limited to use in the skull because, unlike limbs, they do not have to carry the body weight. Though the clinical tests will last for some two years, the researchers expect to put it into practical use in three to four years.
