For years it has been scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens’. However now International cancer experts say tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, stating both to be as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas. Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers believes that the current study will help teen to avoid using sunbeds. The new classification means tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

Common blue dye cures spinal injury

According to U.S. researchers common and safe blue food dye may turn out to be the best treatment available so far for spinal cord injuries. The researchers further explain that when the nerve cells in the brain or spine are damaged, they often release a spurt of chemicals that causes nearby cells to die. Only when this process is stopped, damage that continues to build after a stroke or spinal cord injury can be prevented. One of the chemicals is ATP. Scientist found the blue dye, which they called BBG, would do this via the P2X7R receptor or doorway. Maiken Nedergaard of the University of Rochester Medical Center cautioned that tests in humans are likely still years away.

Henry Markram, director of the Blue Brain Project, said that his team is intending to build a functioning, artificial human brain within the next 10 years. The team started few years ago with the efforts to create a fully functioning artificial rat brain using the IBM supercomputer, Blue Gene. The idea was if they could fruitfully replicate a rat's brain, they would then influence their knowledge to do the same with a human one. With not much success in the beginning, recently the neurons have begun unexpectedly organizing themselves into a more complex pattern. Markram thinks that in 10 years, they'll moreover have an artificial human brain that has consciousness or they'll know that consciousness is more than just a neurological pattern. According to the scientists, this is the beginning of the self-organizing neurological patterns that eventually, in more complex mammal brains, become personality.

Scientist discover new way to kill cancer

A new way of killing cancer cells have been discovered by scientist which could guide to new treatments for a range of different cancers. Researchers at The University of Manchester and Southampton in their latest study has shown that antibodies can kill cancer cells directly. When the antibody binds, it causes lysosomes - small acid-containing sacs - inside the cell to swell and burst, rapidly releasing their toxic contents with fatal results for the cancer cell. Dr Mark Cragg, from the University of Southampton, believes that their findings are significant and open up the possibility of applying the knowledge of how antibodies can be developed to trigger cell death and may enable us to design treatments for other cancers.

Drug dispensing Contact lenses to get rid of the messy eye drops

Even though eye drops account for 90 percent of all eye medication, doctors guess that only 1 to 7 percent of the medication actually gets absorbed into the eye, while the rest trickles down the cheeks. Moreover patients hate eye drops or forget to take them. Researchers have been working for almost a decade on drug-dispensing contact lenses that could deliver eye medication more effectively and now finally created a contact lens that can deliver a high concentration of antibiotic at a constant rate for more than 30 days. Previous design attempts focused on dissolving medication into the hydrogel material that contacts are made of, and then integrating the particles into the hydrogel lens. The Boston researchers explain their new design is like a pita pocket, with a big wad of drug in the middle of a hydrogel exterior.

Many of us avoid various sports because of fear of injury, especially winter sports. Hydrotech, a new kind of jacket is a hydration protection snowsports wear which acts as a protective gear against those accidental slips on the ice. The design includes an impact bladder that can be filled with air and water and hence provides a layer of protection between the users back and snow upon a crash. On impact, the air is pushed up the back channel and into the dissipation chamber located around the jacket’s neck, inflating it. So carry on your winter sports affair without any far of injuries.

Infants understand dogs better

According to new research infants just 6 months old can understand different dog bark with little or no previous exposure to dogs. Babies’ upto six months can match the sounds of an angry growl and a friendly bark to photos of dogs displaying aggressive and welcoming body language. The lead author of the study feels experiments of this kind help us understand how babies learn so rapidly. Emotion is one of the first things babies pick up on in their social world.
