Stem cells negate the need for donors with compatible blood types

sem_blood_cells.jpg Blood transfusions and its associated scarcity of donors used to be the most common issue for hospital drama, but not anymore. As scientists have conducted stem cell research, which allows scientists to use embryonic stem cells in order to generate blood. This in turn ensures an unlimited supply of type O-negative blood, which is supposedly the most sought after blood type. Robert Lanza and his colleagues at the Mayo Clinic and University of Illinois have devised this method of blood generation. They advise folks not to stop donating blood as yet, as this method of blood creation is yet to be tested on animals, much less humans.

Scientists claim that at this stage the work shows considerable potential, but it has certainly not progressed to the stage where the cultured cells are fully equivalent to natural cells. This would involve a lot more efforts to be put in, in order to completely develop this process, but it's worth the while considering the growing concerns over incurable diseases like Cancer and AIDS.
