- A medical device that warns about seizures will save lives of millions
-
Only folks who are a victim to the uncalled seizures can identify with the real meaning of the word uncertainty. Striking without a hint of warning, epileptic seizures can turn fatal too. But since technology is escalating at break neck speed, it won’t be long before we come across a device that can warn of a seizure before it strikes. A group of researchers from University of Chicago Medical Center are testing out a portable unit designed to detect the abnormal brain activity that happens before a seizure. Akin to a system that is used to detect an explosion or an earthquake, this device will be made up of a compact EEG machine that will monitor brain activity. When the signs of electrical trouble are picked up, the machine would transmit a warning to a receiver. this in turn can warn the patient of the looming seizure and act in response accordingly.
However the only hitch in this system is that the researchers are still UNCERTAIN about the algorithms or codes that are needed to make the monitoring system successful. Working in conjunction with the Argonne National Laboratory, the authorities at the university believe that it may be some time before such a system can surface to help millions of patients.
